History of the Cambridge and Newmarket Polo Club
The Cambridge and Newmarket Polo Club was founded in 1989 by Larry Le Ggatt, Alison Schwabe and Christopher Walkinshaw at Lower Farm, Dullingham, near Newmarket. It also offers playing facilities for Cambridge University Polo Club and the Pony Club. The Varsity Match was played there in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1994 before moving to Guards. The Patron is HH Arvind Singh Mewar, Maharana of Udaipur and the members have visited India and played polo as guests of His Highness.
Over the past few years the club has expanded out towards Lode, on the fens. At Dullingham we have two pitches and a clubhouse situated between the two grounds. However at Lode, we have expanded the club immensely and have a total of five pitches and one stick-and-ball ground.
The land at Lode lies next to the river Cam, on a layer of peat that is 17 feet (over 6 metres) deep. This makes the pitches springy, soft and a sensation to play on. All pitches also have the advantage of irrigation. At Lode there is the opportunity for livery, including 60 acres of grassland for horses very close to the river and the option of camping alongside them as well.
The Club is a friendly country club offering mainly low goal tournaments with the occasional medium or high goal matches.
The principal tournament is for the magnificent Udaipur Cup, currently played at 8-goal level.
